Man followed woman to apartment, sexually assaulted her, police say

SALT LAKE CITY — Salt Lake police have arrested a man who they say followed a woman to her apartment complex and assaulted her near a stairwell.

Joshua Funk, 31, is accused of illegally entering the complex, pushing a woman down, slapping her and telling her that he was going to create “pornography” with her, according to a police affidavit. He then allegedly exposed himself to the woman and grabbed her.

The incident happened Sunday near 500 East and 400 South, according to police.

Funk was arrested and booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of forcible sexual abuse, kidnapping, burglary and lewdness. Police say he was also wanted for a recent shoplifting incident at a grocery story in the same area during which a rock was thrown at employees. Tuesday afternoon, he was charged in 3rd District Court with robbery, a second-degree felony, in connection with the shoplifting incident.

“(Funk) is a danger to society due to the seriousness of the offenses and for the reason he frequents the area of the apartment complex,” police wrote in the affidavit.
